Phil Woods
“
I have to say that this is one of the best records I have heard from the famous alto saxophonist, who appears here in his best form. However, this is jazz of masters. If you like jazz that is not futuristic, linked to the bebop tradition, this record is for you

«Phil Woods recorded live this new quintet characterized by the entry of a trumpet player like Tom Harrell. And it is precisely to the latter, without a doubt, that attention goes immediately from the first notes, with great force. This trumpet reveals the life-giving breath of the great musicians who certainly inspired it (and the name to be mentioned first seems to be Clifford Brown’s), but by now Harrell’s personality is clear, having reached his peak, his maturity and, above all, the recognition he deserves. Splendid soloist, technically gifted, stylistically ingenious. He has an open sonority with some whims of vibrato and a flickering phrasing, often pushed with great naturalness towards the high register. To the merits of the great soloist, Woods also adds the structure of the true leader: his groups have always shown to be prudent, in particular with efficient and propulsive rhythm sections. There are ninety and more minutes of fresh music from the band which, let’s not forget, was ranked second to only the Miles Davis group in our recent Top Jazz poll». Integrity
