Jerry Bergonzi
“
This guy is the real tower of powe. And to my ears his holds is own with his elders- Joe Henderson , Sonny Rollins, Johnny Griffin. His bold penetrating tone and furiously paced streams of notes make for a commanding voice indeed. His passionate improvisations are marked by a consistency of strength in every register and a perchance of Harmonic development.

«Bergonzi is a soloist with a great practical sense, a humble and perfect builder of improvisations. It is no coincidence that he was taken on by the label Blue Note-ish as by Red Records. Bergonzi engages with dynamic and strong executions at the same time, facing fast tempos with an ironclad technical preparation. The Coltranian sign fades in the face of the warm passion and restless construction of the solos, which at times touch peaks of stimulating excitement. (…). In short, if you really want to insist on the Constantan heritage, you must also specify that this really is the family’s silverware.».

«A musician for musicians, for too long considered an epigone of Coltrane, Bergonzi is instead a continuer of the jazz saxophonist tradition. If in the 1950s musicians synthesized the lessons of Hawkins and Young, today it is logical and natural to reunite Rollins, Coltrane and maybe Joe Henderson together, creating a new linguistic frontier. It is enough to listen to the beautiful piece Tilt to realize its depth of language and inspiration: an allusive, nocturnal theme, reminiscent of the atmosphere of the famous Blue Seven by Rollins, is followed by the dramatic crescendo of coherent improvisation over a suspended time, vaguely afro, which recalls the Coltranian intensity and scales a certain obliquity of the Henderson-style phrasing».
